8 Nankai Trough

Noble-gas geochemistry has been shown to change in response to the terrigenic fluid emission triggered by major seismic events, as observed in the recent case of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake (Sano et al., 2014). The Nankai Trough offshore Japan (highlighted by the rectangle in the figure) is located close to the triple junction of the Eurasian, Philippine and Pacific plates. The region is known for the occurrence of great megathrust earthquakes. The NoGOS project aims to provide first insights on the distribution of noble-gas abundances along the Nankai Trough that will set an essential data basis to understand potential changes in relation to upcoming seismic events.
